On Tuesday, October 17, the boys and girls Cross Country teams traveled to Tomball to compete in their final regular season meet.
For the first time in two seasons, the temperatures finally cooled off allowing for perfect running weather on a classic, rolling hills, cross country course. Thanks to the great weather and to the fact that the team put in peak performances mentally and physically, they finished with twenty-one of twenty-six new all-time Personal Records (PR's).
The Girls Team was led by Clare Cosgray '18 who had been eyeing a sub fourteen minute two mile all season. Clare showed pure determination, not letting any of the hills get in the way of her goal, cruising to a twenty-second place finish as Coach Cal screamed the final countdown to fourteen minutes stopping at 13:48! Close behind, and also in top thirty, were our runners-that-think-they-are-soccer-players May Lien Le '18 and Sabrina Hillyer '19. Rounding out the team scoring for a sixth place team finish was Magaret Thorseth '19 and Caitlyn Cano '19 scoring points, and Isabella Cardendas '21 and Shelby Stoddard '19 taking points from other teams. (Cross Country scores top 5 for points total with top 7 displacing points from other teams, lowest score wins with points based on place: 1st = 1, 2nd = 2, etc.)
The Boys Varsity Team saw similar personal best times and season best times across the board with Canyon Neundorfer '20 becoming our only state qualifier with his top twenty finish in eighteen minutes eleven seconds for 5km (3.1mi). The lead boys came through the first mile in a spicy sub five minute mile but Canyon kept his cool and the top twenty always in striking distance running a tough race. This encouraged Will Glueck '19, Mark England '18, and Joseph Cosgray '21 on to all running under twenty minutes. Thomas Rider '19 rounded out the scoring with Jacob Gordon '21 and Matt De Guzman '19 rounding out the team scoring for a fifth place team finish.
In the boys Junior Varsity race the finishes were just as exciting with Sean Cooney '20, Ian Vuyk '18, and Corey Gowen '20 working together for top thirty finishes. Jude Riojas '21 and Luke Sullivan '20 brought the team in for a fifth place JV finish.
We all wish Canyon fast legs as he travels to Waco as our lone lion to compete at the TAPPS 6A State Cross Country Championships!
